Narsimhulu's story

Mahanthipoor village is a backward area in Bomraspet mandal having 960 population of which 26 are disabled persons. 3 of these are severely disabled, Narsimhulu being one of these. He is a quadriplegic, unable to walk as both lower limbs and upper limbs are paralyzed. He studied up to 3rd Standard. For higher studies all the children have to travel 7 kms to another village. Because of his disability he did not go to the other village, as there is no transportation like buses or any other traveling facilities. He stopped his studies and sat at home. He was unable to move even in his own village. He went into a depression that he was totally incapable of anything.

In 2001, a Social worker from Commitments went to this village and identified 26 members and out of them, 10 members were made members of a self help group and they started saving 10 rupees per month. Among the 10 members, Narsimhulu was also one. He also discussed his problem that he was unable to come to the SHG meeting. With the help of his family members he is saving some amount in the SHG savings but was unable to walk and do his own works. The SHG members discussed and prepared one resolution paper and submitted to the project. With the help of Commitments and SHG he got one tricycle. After that he and his family members find it much more easy to come to the SHG meeting and go around the village and for the first time in his life Narsimhulu got an idea of how his village looks like and the kind of development going around.

He started thinking about his house. He has a small hut. He discussed about this problem in SHG. All the members prepared a list of those in need of housing. They met the District Collector, his petition was taken up immediately and houses were sanctioned under the IAY scheme. Narsimhulu built an IAY house and today has gained the respect of his family and from other persons. The SHG members elected him as a treasurer of the SHG.

Along with the issues of PWD the SHG members also discuss about the other issues of their village. Mr. Narsimhulu also wants to take up some work as part of self-employment. He put in a petition to the SHG members, and was able to avail a loan of Rs. 5000/- under CIF and he has opened a petty shop with the help of his family members. As the wholesale dealers deliver the materials directly to his shop, he does not have to run around to get them. Now he is able to stand on his own legs at least economically. He sells goods worthRs.150 to 200 and is now happy with his family as well as being a member of the SHG.
