Manohari
is now about 20. She was attacked by polio at the age of three. She did
her primary schooling in her own village, Tatikunta, maldakal mandal.
Life became very hard for her and the conditions became worse for her
after the coming of her step mother. She used to harass the children with
the intention that they will run away from the home so that her children
will get the maximum benefit. The client's father was a henpecked husband
but used to encourage the children for studies. The client next came to
Gadwal for her high school studies where she stayed in the girl's hostel.
It was very hard for her to walk keeping her hand on the right leg. The
client was always looked down because of her disability and was abused
with various words in her school. This stigma made her more depressed
and affected her performance in the academic level. She used to isolate
herself from the rest of the friends. In the mean time she finished her
high school and joined in intermediate in the Gyana prabha college Gadwal.
Life was no different even here and she failed in all the subjects of
first and second year and she came back to her home. Her step mother used
to torture her with words, unable to bear this the client attempted suicide
two times.

It was at this time
that Commitment's SAMARDH project has started its branch in Gadwal with
its operations in the three Mandals of Maldakal, Dharoor and Gattu. The
client's village comes under Maldakal Mandal. Commitments started its
work with the identification of differently abled (Both physically and
mentally) by way of survey where in the social worker Mr. Shekar identified
the client and took the case history and tried to identify the gaps because
of which she is lagging in her development. The first thing that the social
worker found out is the she is very low in her confidence. The social
worker started from that point and tried to build confidence in her by
telling about personalities like Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Edison who succeeded
after failures.

Slowly after four visits the client gained in the social worker and slowly
started to ventilate her emotions as to how she use to feel when others
use to tease her because of her disability. The social worker started
telling her regarding the operation facilities in BIRRDS hospital at Tirupati
for free of cost. After which there is every chance to walk normally.
The client was hesitant and told the social worker to talk with her father
and brothers. On the next day the social worker came with the Physiotherapist
Ms.Sahitya Reddy where in she observed the client and suggested to get
medical certificate from Mahaboobnagar Government hospital. She got certificate
which shows the disability of 45%. After thorough assessment by the Physiotherapist
and explanation regarding the precautions to be taken before and after
the surgery. In the mean time with the encouragement of the social worker
Mr.Sekhar she joined again in the second year of intermediate (Bi.P.C).The
social worker talked with the brothers of the client and was able to convince
them for surgery in BIRRDS hospital. The client was admitted in the BIRRDS
hospital on 21st of December 2005. The surgery was carried out two weeks
after the admission which was successful and the band-aids were removed
on 15th of January 2006. The client was sent back to her home after three
days of removal of Band-Aid.

Rehabilitation played
an important role in the success of the surgery because after the surgery
the physic again examined her and gave suggestion regarding the positioning
of limb and suggested stretching and strengthening exercises and also
usage of caliper and gait training with the help of social worker and
activist of that particular village which were administered and monitored
very closely with the case. At one point it became very difficult for
the social worker when the client disagreed to wear calipers because as
it was creating pain and blisters but the social worker and his team was
able to convince her and build confidence in her because of which the
client started using it very effectively.

At this point the
family members were clearly able to observe the increase in confidence
in the client, also there was less harassment in the college and there
was full support rendered to the client by the family(except her step
mother)because of which she was able to pass the exam and now the client
is in her first year of graduation .The family decided to do her marriage
as alliances were coming for her. Life for her has suddenly changed with
the intervention of Commitments, SAMARDH project because of which she
got rid of her disability and also on the academic front she was able
to show her performance.
