Chakali's story

Chakali Chandramma is a member of the Navajeevana vikalangula Sangham. She lives in a joint family with 7 members, the two children and her husband, mother-in-law who is 65 years old as well as her brother in law and his wife and their son. Chandramma’s husband married her sister also, for bearing her maternal family
responsibilities. Their main livelihood is washing the clothes of the villagers. At the time of first pregnancy Chandramma suffered from severe anemia due to lack of nutritious food, as a result her right leg was paralysed and she became incapable to do her regular activities
and she needed help as she used to suffer from bouts of fainting. The doctors said that there was no guarantee of getting normal again. Her husband and parents took her to traditional healers. She took local ayurvedic medicines, went to hospitals even though she was unable to walk. She used to walk slowly with the support of a stick. After few years she became pregnant and delivered another child and was operated upon for family planning. She is doing household work but not going to fieldwork. Family members scolded her for this, that she is not earning any money. Even if Chandramma felt like earning she was physically unable to do that.

The Social worker of Commitments regularly went to this village and met Chandramma’s family. The Social worker counseled the members of the family to accept her as part of the family and respect her at least as a human being and also gave occupational therapy to Chandramma. Today, Chandramma herself does her own work without depending on anyone. When the group members discussed about their problems, Chandramma also told about her problem that her mother in law and other family members keep ill treating her because she is not earning any money but she also- felt that the members of the family were not calculating the household work and that she had no respect at all in the family.

The Sangham members discussed her problem seriously. The Group leader regularly attended the village organization meeting and she raised Chandramma’s issue there. The V.O. members sanctioned an amount of Rs.8250/- to Chandramma under C.I.F. (Community Investment Fund) to open a laundry shop. Chandramma opened a laundry shop at the main roadside and is earning Rs.30/- per day. Every month she is repaying the C.I.F. loan money to V.O. Now she is also sharing the family expenses by giving Rs.20 of what she earns every day. Family members and community members are giving respect to her. Now she has great confidence regarding her livelihood.
